After Learning How Students Buy Food, Clever Dog Uses Leaves as Money to ‘Pay’ For Cookies

December 4, 2019 By Mike Thurstone

The Diversified Technical Institute of Monterrey Casanare, Colombia is home not only to various students but also to a black Labrador named Negro.

This dog is a loved member of the campus and mingles with the students and staff freely. From time to time, students used to feed him cookies from the cafeteria.

It seems Negro did develop a taste for cookies. But students could not provide Negro with all the cookies he wanted. Hence, this furry little guy decided to take things into his own hands.

According to teacher Angel Garcia Bernal, Negro has most likely been observing students who buy cookies from the cafeteria.

Upon watching them, he concluded that if he gave bits of something to the vendor, he would get cookies in return.

Then one day, Negro came to the cafeteria with a leaf in his mouth, obviously wanting to purchase his cookies.

He “paid the leaf’ at the counter and demanded what he wanted. The cafeteria vendors were shocked by the dog’s behavior.

They wondered how on earth the dog got that idea to ask for cookies using a leaf. The cafeteria vendors politely gave two cookies to their ‘new’ customer.

Negro cannot resist himself when there are sweets on the cafeteria menu. Now he knows that he can easily get cookies if he pays for them with leaves. This has rendered him unstoppable.

The cafeteria vendors make sure that he gets two cookies every day. This may be due to health concerns or the fact that purchases are being made using leaves.

Gladys Baretto, the store attendant, said that,” Negro comes daily to the cafeteria with a leaf in his mouth and wagging his tail, asking for cookies, that is his daily purchase”.

The jet-black Labrador is fed, housed and taken care of by the institute’s faculty. The cafeteria also makes sure that he gets treats which are safe for dogs to consume. At first, it makes one want to cry. But the intelligence of Negro is astounding.

Dogs like Negro make institutes like this as their homes to prevent starvation and death. Not all such dogs have happy endings. Many posh campuses do not allow insects to come in, let alone a dog. This incident is a model that shows us how we can co-exist with animals.

This incident was reported by the Dodo, whose mission is to publish inspiring stories of people and animals who make a difference in others’ lives.

When humans develop, we tend to forget about fellow humans and other fellow animals. At the least, our fellow humans can raise a voice, asking for their needs.

But Negro and countless other animals do not have a voice of their own. Consideration to these fellow creatures is an important part of life.

While running behind the material objects we tend to chase in life, we forget the innocence and the helplessness of such animals.

So, instead of commenting “wow, that is cute” to pictures of cats and dogs on Facebook and Instagram, help save and protect these animals.
