Homelessness is certainly one of the biggest socio-economic issues that affect every major city around the world.
Factors range from job loss, end of a relationship, family issues, and mental health. Nonetheless, homelessness is certainly devastating to those who experience it.
In an effort to help its local homeless people, a charity in Brisbane, Australia, called Beddown, has come up with an innovative idea.
Put beds in empty parking spaces and provide bare basic services such as dentists, hairdressers, and general doctors.
The heartwarming initiative is aiming to help the struggling homeless people get back on their feet and provide anything they can to support them getting off the streets.
The founder of Beddown, Mr. Norman McGillivaray said that he got the idea while walking to his car and noticing all the empty parking lots. He then contacted Secure Parking, which is one of Australia’s largest carpark operators and asked them to set up a trial. Currently only available in Queensland, the charity says that they are planning to set up similar operations around the country.
On their Instagram page, Beddown says: “We will look to get as close as we can to a proper comfortable bed to provide the homeless with a great night’s sleep is our ultimate goal. Sleep deprivation is a massive issue for our homeless, so being in a place that offers shelter and is safe, secure, and comfortable, we believe, will have a big impact on those who use Beddown.”
During the trials, the charity shared some statistis, and the results were impressive. Every single one of the 41 guests who were included in the trial said the they felt 100% SAFE.
