How To Freeze Avocados So That You Always Have Fresh On Hand

March 7, 2019 By Mike Thurstone

Storing a fresh avocado for a long period can be quite a challenging task. It seems like every time we buy avocado its either not ripe, or it goes rotten few days later.

Considering that avocados are not as cheap as some other fruits or vegetables, having them going bad on you can be quite disappointing. Luckily though, avocados can be easily frozen so that you have a delicious ripe avocado every time you need.

According to Jodi Brown, to properly freeze avocados you should simply remove the pit and slice the avocados lengthwise. On a cookie sheet, arranged the halved avocados and place the entire cookie sheet in the freezer. Freezing the avocados overnight is the best, although a few hours is likely fine, too.

When the avocados are completely frozen, remove the individual avocados using a spatula, and place them into a sealable bag. By freezing the avocados in this way will ensure that they do not freeze altogether in one giant clump.

Next time you need fresh avocado, simply take one bag out on the freezer and use it to make delicious guacamole, or throw it into a blender to make your smoothie.

I had no idea you could successfully freeze avocados! I never looked it up because I just assumed and never confirmed. Thank you so much! I’ll definitely try it!

This does NOT work. I grew up in CA with avocado trees on our property. Freezing totally changes the texture and they are gross!!! Avocados are meant to be eaten ripe and fresh. Also, never eat the pit – it is toxic.

Agreed. BUT it’s a perfect plan for using avocados for desserts … like avocado ice cream which sounds disgusting but is absolutely sublime! I use avocados in a lot of raw food desserts.

Is this suitable for normal eating too, other than smoothie use?

Throw that avocado pit into your smoothie, too. At least if you have a Vitamix or similar. Seeds of all kinds are great anti-cancer food.

Most seeds have cyanide in them. Please consider NOT breaking them up for consumption.

To ingest the amount of cyanide required to kill you, you will need about 200 apple seeds AFAIK avocado does not contain any.

To ingest the amount of cyanide required to kill you, you will need about 200 apple seeds AFAIK avocado does not contain the same amount so you will need to eat a lot more. One or two will not kill you

Are they ripe or can you freeze ones that aren’t quite ready to eat yet?

Just remember if you freeze avocados (or bananas or any fruit) before they are ripe, they will not continue to ripen once thawed. Turning dark is not a sign of ripening, as even green bananas will turn dark when frozen. Always allow your fruits to come to full ripeness, then freeze!

I have been freezing bananas for many years. They do NOT go brown at all. Peel them, put them straight away into the freezer and that is how they will stay until you use them.

“Seeds of all kinds are great anti-cancer food.” Except peach and apricot seeds, which are a great source of cyanide and will kill you.

I tried freezing these once (unfortunately the whole thing uncut, didn’t know better.) and they came out REALLY rubbery and inedible. Does cutting them out from the husk, removing the seed, and putting them on the cookie sheet to freeze before putting it in a bag remove the chance of these turning rubbery?

have been doing this for years but I mash the avocado with a fork, since I generally make guacamole with mine ….. place into plastic freezer bags and it is easy to remove most of the air as it can be spread in the bag ….. then when I wish to make my guac, I simply run some cold water on the bag and proceed …. works great

You can leave them out until ripe and put them in the refrigerator, this will retain that ripeness for quite awhile. I have also froze and they good for guacamole and such.

No, you won’t “always have fresh on hand”, you’ll have frozen avocado with varying texture, only suitable for blending.

Do the avocados get brown since they no longer have the pit when they’re frozen? Thanks

I leave the skin on. Then when going to use I hold under hot running water skin side up. It comes off easy… Been doing this for years now, IM a certified chef. I didn’t know either..works great. let them get to just ripe as well, dont want them too soft. and you dont have to pan them up… waste of time… just bag them. but look at the picture. they are a mess in that bag… with the skin on you dont get that mess.. saw a question on unripe, quickest way to ripen is to leave in a paper bag with a very ripe or warmed banana, the gas it gives off with speed the ripening of the avocado.

True we from the Hawaiian Islands called avocados pears. Imagine my surprise when I went into the Marines oh so many years ago, they put pears in a salad with salt and pepper!. My family always mashed them with sugar and made pear sandwiches, oh so onolicious. I still love pear sandwiches!
