The More You Hang Out With Your Mom, The Longer She’ll Live, Study Shows

February 5, 2019 By Mike Thurstone

A 2012 study reveals how the relationship between parents and their children can prolong parents lives. The study noticed that loneliness is a vital factor for the quality of life in older adults.

Loneliness is linked to a high risk of depression, cognitive impairment and some other health problems such as coronary artery disease. It can even lead to premature death.

A study conducted 1,600 adults with an average age of 71 researchers concluded that 23 per cent of participants who reported being lonely died within six years of the research, while during the same six-year period, only 14 per cent of those who said thay had companionship died.

The Link between Social Ties and Health

How the social ties can be critical to prolonging life was examined in another study published in the journal PLoS Medicine in 2010. According to the paper, the social relationships are as important losing weight if you are obese.

PhD Julianne Holt-Lunstad, the author of the study, stated that social relationships are essential not only to the quality of life but also for longevity.

Human history teaches that people relyed on others for survival, protection, and food. Julianne reveals that despite modern advancements that allow people more independent lifestyle, it seems that the relationships nonetheless still impact the chances of survival.

Numerous researchers confirm that loneliness and social isolation are categorically terrible for people’s health. In addition, solitude has been named a more significant health risk than some other risks like smoking or obesity.

People who spend more time with their friends or family are generally much happier and satisfied. As a powerful remedy to declining health, experts suggest laughing. Laughing boosts our immune system, stimulates both blood flow and mental activity and lowers the blood pressure.

Here are some suggestions for you to consider:

1) Plan a visit to your parents, and bring a few good jokes along with you!

2) Spending time with your parents benefits you too.

3) As everyone would agree, grandparents can be significant support when it comes to babysitting. Research suggests that grandparents who babysit are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia. It is a win-win situation, for both your kids and the grandparents.

4) Invite your parents to come for lunch/dinner.

5) Invent fun things to do; an annual family photo, volunteering together or making everyone’s favourite food or cake.

6) The possibilities are endless.

Bottom line—spend more quality time with family and everyone will benefit.
