Have you heard of the many health benefits of drinking lemon water? Ironically though asking for lemon water in a restaurant might do more damage than good. According to numerous studies, lemon water offered at restaurants is not something you want to be drinking.
According to a study conducted by ABC news, examining the 10 most germ-filled places in the restaurant, lemon wedges were found the best positive on human fecal matter.
Now, you may be wondering how does human waste come in touch with lemons. Well, cameras installed by ABC news caught employees grabbing the lemons with their bare hands not using the provided gloves or even tongs. If after using the bathroom they haven’t washed their hands, it’s easy to see how the levers can get contaminated with human feces.
According to another study published in the Journal of Environmental Health, out of the 76 lemons from 21 different restaurants tested, over 70% of those tested positive in microbes and other harmful bacteria, including E. coli.
Its a known fact that not all the restaurants are maintaining perfect health and safety procedures, so to avoid getting sick and come into contact with nasty germs, always remember to wash your hands before you eat your food.
Personally, I would avoid anything garnished with a lemon from a restaurant ever again.
