A Californian company is promising to help enjoy your morning coffee while at the same time, be environmentally friendly with these biodegradable coffee cups.
Their initiative called Reduce. Reuse. Grow., aims to help replant trees and flowers around the country, by implanting each cup with seeds for either a tree or native plant complete with a local zone, showing where it should be planted.
Simply by dumping the cup in a specially marked bin at the cafe, or taking it home and soaking it in some water, the cup releases the seeds that are ready to be planted.
And for those that are not so ‘green thumb,’ by dumping the cups into waste bins, they’ll still help their local environment because each cup decomposes in little over 180 days and release seeds and nutrients into local landfills, thus help plant more trees.
Their last challenge is to make the container 100 per cent biodegradable, since currently the coffee cup lid remains plastic.
The company is also working on other products, with goal to make all takeout containers biodegradable.
