A hobby photographer Martin Le-May, from East London, has made some really interesting photos in his career, and his latest one includes a baby weasel and a woodpecker. This is his comical story behind the photo.
As he was enjoying a walk with his wife on a beautiful day at Hornchurch Country Park, they heard a strange noise and saw the baby weasel trying to rob the woodpecker nest.
When the woodpecker flew right near them, the couple could see it had a small mammal on its back – and that’s when Le-May, snapped these pictures.
The adorable duo was engaged in a struggle for life.
In a statement for Business Insider, Le-May said , “The bird flew across us and slightly in our direction; suddenly it was obvious it had a small mammal on its back, and this was a struggle for life.”
After the bird landed, the weasel became slightly distracted by Le-May and his wife. This gave the lucky woodpecker a chance to escape with his life, flying up into the surrounding trees and out of sight.
The weasel lost this round: Woodpecker: 1, Weasel: 0. Le-May wrote, “The woodpecker left with its life. The weasel just disappeared into the long grass, hungry.”
As their name suggests, Weasels are famous for robbing nests. Most likely that is exactly what this baby weasel was attempting to do, although he certainly didn’t anticipate the woodpecker to put up such an incredible fight.

The photos were shared on Twitter by bird-enthusiast Jason Ward, who uploaded a picture of the weasel catching a ride. While many would argue that the duo seems as they are best buddies, the actual story was quick to spread out as the photo went viral.
