How to Get Rid of Hiccups Fast

December 19, 2021 By Mike Thurstone

These are some simple hiccup remedies to get rid of hiccups.

1. Hold your breath

2. Drink from the opposite side

3. Drink something warm

4. Eat something sour

5. Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth

6. Blow into a paper bag and pinch it closed after one blow

These are some hiccup cures to stop hiccups, most notably holding your breath for a couple minutes which will cure hiccups in most cases according to most sources that have been provided by reputable sources with relevant backgrounds in the field of medicine/healthcare etc., including doctors and hospitals etc., not just someone’s opinion on reddit about hiccups but science and studies and facts. Finally hiccup remedies include:

7. Chew on a lemon or an ice cube

8. Wear your tightest shirt and put it into hot water (or the shower) for five minutes

9. Eat very spicy food without drinking anything with it (cayenne pepper works well for this, since it burns the inside of your mouth)

10. Use a hammer to make yourself sneeze (it’s said to be effective because hiccups are caused by a spasm in the diaphragm; but I don’t think hiccups are really the same thing as a sneeze anyways… anyhow…)

11. Lie down on your back with your head hanging off the edge of the bed (you can use a couple pillows)

12. Take hiccup medicine like hiccups gone, hic-ups nip-ups, hicups no more, hiccups relief etc.

13. Suck on a sugar cube, sweet piece of candy or suck on some sugar free gum (sugar is said to be good for hiccups)

14. Eat two teaspoons full of shredded horseradish root mixed into a glass of lukewarm water

15. Drink from the opposite side

16. Inhale the smell of food cooking such as baking bread or boiling soup etc., if you have any around your home because it’s been said that this may cure hiccups

17. Swallow a teaspoon of sugar

18. Pinch your nose shut and drink a glass of water (or take a sip of water and then plug your nose so you can’t breathe out, and then drink the water)

19. Bite on a lemon or lime

20. Pull your knees up to your chest and rock back and forth for 30 seconds

21. Rub the palm of your hand on the back of your neck for a minute

22. Gargle with ice cold water

23. Blow into a paper bag and pinch it closed after one blow

Hiccups are an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm muscle that causes an individual to repeatedly hiccup, or gasp for air. There are a few hiccup cures that may help to stop hiccups, but you should consult a doctor or qualified healthcare professional before attempting any hiccup remedy.

Hiccups can be caused by a number of factors such as eating too quickly, drinking carbonated beverages and eating fatty foods. You might also get hiccups if you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is the backward flow of stomach acid into your esophagus. A hiccup cure of simply waiting for them to go away on their own may work for some people, but others who suffer from chronic hiccups usually find it necessary to seek medical advice and treatment.
