89-Year-Old Dog Lover Knitted 450 Blankets and Coats for Shelter Pups

July 20, 2019 By Mike Thurstone

An inspiring and lovely 89-year-old woman and a big dog lover have knitted over 450 coats and blankets for pups at her local animal shelter.

A 127-year-old charity, Dogs Trust that operates to save stray dogs throughout the UK took to Instagram to share the exciting news. “Local dog lover Maisie Green, aged 89 years hand, knits blankets and dog coats for Dogs Trust Basildon,” they said.

They said that Mrs. Green has hand-knitted blankets sweaters for dogs at the Basildon centre for many years.

“It keeps me busy, and I often like to knit while I watch television,” Green told Tin Canada. It takes her three days to knit a doggy blanket and one day to make a coat. “I’m delighted to be helping the four-legged residents of the centre in some way.”

According to the charity, Mrs. Green is one of many kind volunteers who continually help shelter dogs, as its shelters care for over 1,400 homeless and stray pups at any given time.

Like many other shelters, the Basildon Dogs Trust encourages people to help care for its animals by donating warm blankets, and as a plus, volunteers can spend one-on-one time with its adorable residents, which can help them build trust.

However, Mrs.Green is not alone in her effort to help these beautiful animals. An 11-year-old Kristyn Caicedo is the co-founder of SavFur Rescue, a nonprofit organization that makes organic vegan dog treats for the pets of people living on the streets.

According to SavFur rescue, between five and ten percent of homeless people have their loyal pets right beside them. Every time someone purchases a bag of treats, a meal is given to a homeless animal.
