Ikea’s indoor garden system is the ideal alternative for those who wish to grow their own greens and veggies all year round but are limited with space.
Ikea’s indoor hydroponic garden enables healthy eating enthusiasts to grow fresh produce at home without any previous gardening experience or the need for soil.
The hydroponic system of the garden suggests that adequate light and water is all you need to grow the plants successfully at the convenience of your own home.
The report suggests many of the vegetables available in the supermarkets today are grown exactly using this method. The soft foam plugs that come with the Ikea system allow the seeds to sprout and then maintain the seeds moist without over-watering them.
Following the germination of the seeds, all that it requires is to move the whole foam plug into its own separate small pot and use pumice stones to fill it up to retain the water.
The pots can later be moved to a growing tray that is fitted with a solar lamp, which provide with enough nourishment to the plants to last all year round.
It is suggested that the system is so efficient that it can even thrive in rooms without any sunlight, although they can be installed on a windowsill that gets a lot of sun if possible.
The growing tray is also fitted with a built-in water sensor, which guarantees that the plants are supplied the precise amount of water.
“The challenge was to make growing plants in a hydroponic system simple so that anyone could succeed…” explains Helena Karlén, from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
Named in the KRYDDA/VÄXER series, the design was carried out of a joint venture with agricultural scientists in Sweden, with those who live in apartments or don’t have a garden as a target market, as well as people who want only fresh produce even during the off-season period.
While the system is not the only indoor hydroponic system, it is definitely a more affordable alternative than most, and ideal for those with limited space.
