Dementia is on the rise in recent years and can be described as a set of symptoms related to memory decline and cognitive impairment.
Between 60 and 80% of all dementia cases accounts for Alzheimer’s disease. Although modern medicine offers no cure for the symptoms associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s, recognising the signs can immensely help to slow down its progression.
The following are six early warning signs of dementia:
1. Inability To Understand Social Cues
During the early stages of dementia, people are often experiencing increased difficulty getting social cues. They can have trouble understanding jokes and sarcasm, or are unable to recognise lies.
2. Drastic Changes In Behavior
Another early sign of dementia is when a person experience changes to their normal personalities. Sudden mood swings, anger or irritability.
3. The loss in the Sense Of Direction
Finding it difficult to follow or remember directions, is one of the earliest warning signs of dementia. A usual route the person may have traveled all his/her life might suddenly become unfamiliar becoming lost regularly.
4. Becoming Closed Within Yourself
When early symptoms of dementia kick in people may become confused and start to lose their vocabulary, this can cause one to become withdrawn and unusually quiet than they normally would be.
5. Poor Coordination
People with Early dementia may start to lose their hand-eye coordination. They may also begin having trouble with their spatial abilities and fall or trip often.
6. Bad Judgement
During the early stages of dementia, people may start exhibiting poor judgement due to their cognitive skills impairment. Hence, people living with dementia are easy prey for fraudsters and scammers.
7. Motivation Loss
People with early signs of dementia may find themselves depressed and start to lose motivation in activities or hobbies that they previously enjoyed doing.
8. General Forgetfulness
One of the most noticeable symptoms of dementia is the failure to retain information. People with early signs of dementia may have trouble remembering where they’ve put their keys or any information you just told them. They may start repeating themselves frequently.
