Thyme Essential Oil Destroys Strep Throat and Respiratory Infections Eases Cough and Sore Throat

February 26, 2019 By Mike Thurstone

Are you experiencing an ache from a sore throat or cough? Don’t worry, the thyme essential oil is an effective cure for just about any infection of the throat or lungs.

A 2011 study revealed thyme oil to be extremely effective against 120 strains of bacteria taken from patients experiencing respiratory, oral and urinary tract infections, including various antibiotic-resistant strains.

A 2013 study concentrated more particularly on strep throat. Out of the 18 essential oils the experts tested, they noticed five that exhibited “significant antibacterial activity” against strep: thyme, cinnamon, oregano, lemon grass and winter savory.

The researchers explained that penicillin is not always the best option at treating Streptococcus pyogenes, and said the five herbs could be an “interesting” option to our “alternative therapeutic arsenal.”

Dr Axe suggests adding two drops of thyme oil to a mouthful of water and rinsing to soothe a sore throat.

In a recent 2016 study, it was discovered that ingestion of thymol — a phenol extracted from thyme oil — significantly reduced the duration of upper respiratory infection, while easing shortness of breath and cough.

The effectiveness of the combination of thyme extract, primrose extract and thymol was “comparable to synthetic antibiotic ambroxol,” the study’s authors wrote.

The researchers also suggested that the extraordinary effects of thymol, thyme and primrose extract mixture are “comparable to synthetic antibiotic ambroxol.”
