Grandfathers are truly an integral part of everyone’s life, and they bring joy and happiness in all of us.
I, for instance, could not imagine my self to have become a person I am today if it wasn’t for my grandfather to be there for me and teach me of all the wisdom in the world.
Having been living with the condition himself, this Brazilian grandfather decided to crochet dolls for children afflicted with a skin condition called vitiligo.
If you’ve ever seen a person with ‘strange’ patches of different color skin on their face and body, you’ve probably come across a person with vitiligo. But you need not worry.
Vitiligo is neither contagious nor life-threatening, but can be stressful and hurt the self-esteem of the people living with it, especially in our modern society that lays so much emphasis on physical appearance.
In an effort to make kids feel more confident, this grandfather has been crocheting dolls for some time now.
His first creation was a doll for his granddaughter. To make her reconnect him with the doll, he decided to add a few patches to it…. And this was the moment he got inspired to make dolls more inclusive.
He also started making dolls in wheelchairs and other disabilities in an effort to break the stigma around people living with conditions.
Grandpa Joao hopes that his creations will inspire children to respect and value the disabled and also to feel normal when meeting a child who is ‘special.’
