Why You Should NEVER Throw Away Onion Skins

Onions are one of the most versatile vegetables used in kitchens around the world. From salads to stews and many other recipes, onions unique taste and flavor speaks a lot about its versatility. Yet, not many people know that onion skin, that usually ends up in the bin, is actually good to preserve too.

Onion skin is known to contain a high amount of antioxidants that is vital for our overall health. Its brown outer layer is rich in dietary fibre, and antioxidants that promote skin and hair health.

Furthermore, the skin of onion contains a high amount of potent pigment known as quercetin, which reduces hypertension and prevents clogging of the arteries. It also has strong sedative properties that help in insomnia treatment, as well as other powerful antibacterial and antifungal characteristics.

The main potent flavonoids know as quercetin helps in eliminating free radicals from the body, and its rich content in insoluble fibre supports proper colon movements.

A diet that includes onion skin will lower the risk of:

– Colon Cancer
– Heart Problems
– Type 2 Diabetes
– Obesity
– Cardiovascular Issues

Onion skin can be consumed in various ways. It can be used in soups and stews or you can simply pour boiling water over some leftover onion skin and let it cool. Once completely cold, strain it and store the soup in a jar. Drink the soup before bedtime!

It is important to mention that onion skins are not recommended for nursing or pregnant women.
