Over a century ago a physician Dr Broda Barnes found that the body temperature indicates the activity of the thyroid gland, especially after waking up.
His finding was published in a book on the function of the thyroid in which he describes a method to test the condition of your thyroid gland.
The test works by taking a thermometer in bed at night and placing it under the armpit for 10 minutes as soon as you wake up.
“Early morning basal temperature”, as this test is known, will reveal the condition of the thyroid, as follows:
1. You have a healthy thyroid if the temperature is between 36.5(97.7f) and 36.8(98.24).
2. If the temperature is below 36.5(97.7f), it means that the thyroid is working slow. If this is the case you may experience depression, fatigue, hair loss, lack of memory, chronic headaches, lack of energy, infections and concentration issues.
3. If the temperature is higher than 36.8(98.24), the thyroid works in an accelerated manner or there is an infection in your body.
For more accurate results, repeat this test for three consecutive days.
It is important to mention that due to infections or menstrual cycle, some women may get an inconsistent result, therefore, the test should be conducted when you are healthy and your cycle is over.
In case the test suggests issues with your thyroid gland, you should immediately visit your doctor and take appropriate action. Its recommended you also manage your stress, consume magnesium-rich foods, vitaming A and B, cortisol and selenium.
