According to Moms Across America, in a historic decision, Costco has put a STOP to the sale of Roundup and all other herbicides containing glyphosate from its shelves.
The anti-GMO awareness association appealed Costco, Lowes and Home Depot to cease selling the products after the recent Johnson vs. Monsanto-cancer verdict was upheld.
The case set a precedent for countless of other lawsuits against Monsanto, all maintaining that exposure to Roundup caused non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
The Moms Across America group collected over 150,000 signatures on change.org, demanding the three retailers cease the sale of the toxic herbicide.
Costco was the first to respond to their demands, according to Moms Across America founder Zen Honeycutt:
“I called the headquarters, and after two days of messages and calls, I did finally confirm with three people that Costco was not ordering Roundup or any glyphosate-based herbicides for the incoming spring shipments,” she wrote on her website.
When she asked for an official statement, Honeycutt said she was told that Costco does not usually issue press releases about which items they have discontinued.
“One employee mentioned that they had looked into organic alternatives first and were happy with the results. More than one employee mentioned the lawsuit (Johnson V Monsanto) for part of the reasoning. They said they just felt like it was the right thing to do.”
UPDATE: Honeycutt has since notified by email that Bryce Wentworth, buyer for Costco’s lawn and garden center, is one of the employees she spoke to. He didn’t want his name used at first but has since made a public statement to the Environmental Health Center verifying Costco’s decision.
The Moms Across America group is now asking their members to call Home Depot and Lowes and ask them to follow suit:
Stop killing weeds, and start eating them!
