Your Forgetfulness Is A Sign Of Extraordinary Intelligence, Scientists Say

March 24, 2019 By Mike Thurstone

You must be worried if you cannot remember some of the thighs which are vital to you. For instance, you continuously forget some dates, peoples’ birthdays and even peoples’ names.

Nonetheless, scientists have proven that the more intelligent you are, the more prominent are the chances of forgetting.

There are some people whose brains can remember more things and details, and there are people whose minds cannot. The second has problems with memorising particular items or things.

Paul Frankland and Blake Richards work as researchers at the University of Toronto. In their opinion, the process of forgetting the thing is normal since we continuously receive new information and the brain rewrites them on the old ones.

In their findings, it is also stated that it may be possible for people who forget more often to be more intelligent than other people. They said that it is better to remember the bigger picture for example, instead of remembering specifics.

Prof. Richards says:

“It’s important that the brain forgets irrelevant details and instead focuses on the things that will help you make decisions in the real world.”

As stated by Curious Mind Magazine:

“It turns out that these two processes interact with each other, allowing for intelligent decision-making in dynamic, noisy environments. The author of the review study, Professor Blake Richards, explains that the real purpose of memory is the optimisation of decision-making. The brain achieves this by filtering out irrelevant details and holding on to things that will contribute to intelligent decisions in the real world.

‘Bad memory’ in this respect is a mechanism in the brain which serves to quickly make space for relevant information and not allow the mind to waste energy and space remembering the mundane and trivial information.

‘Facts,’ are not what the brain perceives as facts. The mind focuses on creating a general picture of the events or a simplified version of some information, which could serve as a means of making better decisions later.”

Memories can be found in the hippocampus on the brain. To have more space for significant things it deletes the unnecessary information. Therefore, we can make a more grand conclusion or resolution reached after consideration.

He also says:

“We know that sport increases the number of neurons in the hippocampus. It’s these very details from your life that are not important, and maybe keep you from making good decisions.”

Despite that, you have to see or consult your doctor if, for instance, you cannot remember more significant parts of your everyday life. As for forgetting the minute unimportant things, you don’t have to be worried because your brain is operating just fine.

Prof. Richards says:

“You don’t want to forget everything, and if you forget a lot more than normal, that might be cause for concern. However, if you’re someone who forgets the occasional detail, that’s probably a sign that your memory system is perfectly healthy and doing exactly what it should be doing.”
