Seniors Are Buying Affordable Tiny Homes to Live Their Golden Years Off the Grid

March 24, 2019 By Mike Thurstone

Nowadays, the old-age pensioners tend to buy tiny, wooden homes. Most often they want them to be on wheels.

By living in this kind of house, they don’t have to worry about a mortgage or having much space which needs to be cleaned. These tiny houses have the necessary components or the features you need neatly fitted into a small space.

Bette Presley is a 72-year-old pensioner, who says that her small home, of the 166-square inch, in Arroyo Grande gives her the relaxed, enjoyable life she wants. Although it is minimal, this home has solar panels; in it, Bette keeps only the significant things. In such a way, she can enjoy nature and her peaceful and pleasant life.

Furthermore, after her daughter’s moving out, Adele Smith, a 61-year-old retired music teacher, thought that her home was too big for her.

“I had my little corner of the living room where I’d watch TV, and I’d use the bathroom and my bedroom and the kitchen. Also, I’m like, I’m just storing crap in this house. I’m not using this stuff.”
Thus, she downsized her home of 1300-square-foot to a 140-square-foot bungalow in Oregon.

Many old-age people want to live in small-scale houses because in this way they do not have many expenses. These houses cost from $10,500 to about $20,000. This is the best choice for old people who want to live alone because these houses have everything they need.

Moreover, these houses help the elderly overcome some of the things which are hard for them. For example, Dani Moore has osteoporosis and has a wheel-chair ramp located at the front part of the house and a rock climbing equipment to take off her seat.

As stated by Today:

“Moore, who runs the blog The Tiny House that Grandma Built, also liked the idea of owning fewer things and downsizing her life — not just for her own sake, but also to make things easier on her adult daughter down the line.

Moore remembers the stress of moving her mother into assisted living and having just two weeks to sort through her mom’s many possessions.

“It was a nightmare,” she said. “And after that, I thought, you know, I so do not want my daughter ever to have to go through this.”

For now, though, Moore is still thriving in her friendly home, and she hopes to stay as long as possible.

“I think as long as I can live independently, I will live tiny,” she said. “If (or) when I can’t live on my own, I will have to find another path. Hopefully, that won’t be for many, many years.”

“Granny pods” is the nickname of the small houses designed and built by MEDCottage. These have all the equipment which is required for old people to have a more natural life without any other person taking care of them.

The Sausage Nonna is business run by three Italian grandmothers who bring and hand over sausages in Chicago by using their tiny houses. On Sundays, they have planned public or social occasion and make sausages; then they go to different places and sell their food there. Occasionally, they bring a package of sausages to their customers.

Well done, girls!
